Review Workflow

When reviews happen and how they impact your profile

Who Reviews Whom

Clients review contractors (and vice versa)

  • After a project is completed and paid, BOTH parties can leave reviews
  • Client reviews contractor on the 5 dimensions
  • Contractor reviews client (e.g., 'Easy to work with,' 'Clear communication,' 'Paid on time')
  • Reviews are optional but strongly encouraged

When Reviews Appear

Timing of review publication

  • Reviews typically appear within 24 hours of submission
  • Both parties can see reviews once published (no hiding)
  • Reviews are permanent; you can't delete them (but can request removal if inappropriate)
  • Review system aggregates all reviews on the contractor's profile

Impact on Verification Tier

Reviews unlock higher contractor tiers

  • Basic tier → Licensed tier: Requires 2+ reviews (4.0+ avg)
  • Licensed tier → Verified Pro: Requires 5+ reviews (4.5+ avg)
  • High reviews are the fastest way to climb verification ladder
  • Verified Pro contractors get featured on job board and attract premium work

Client Reputation

Contractors review clients too

  • Contractors can leave reviews: 'Easy communication,' 'Clear scope,' 'Paid on time'
  • If contractors give low reviews, other contractors see them (affects your hiring power)
  • Be professional and fair; contractor reviews matter to future bids

How to Write Great Reviews

Detailed feedback helps contractors improve

What to Write

Did the work look good? Was it thorough? Any rework needed? Attention to detail?

Example Reviews

  • "Excellent tile work. Grout lines are perfectly even. Very professional finish."
  • "Work was sloppy. Drywall joints are visible and uneven. Had to request rework twice."
  • "Good quality overall, but a few minor details (outlet covers) could have been installed more carefully."

Communication

What to Write

Was the contractor easy to reach? Did they explain changes? Proactive about issues?

Example Reviews

  • "Contractor was great. Responded to messages within hours. Explained every change clearly."
  • "Hard to reach. Took 2-3 days to respond to messages. Vague about timeline updates."
  • "Good communicator. Regular photo updates. Explained material delays upfront."

Common Scenarios

Real review and rating situations

Your kitchen remodel is complete and paid. Client doesn't leave a review.

You can send a reminder message: 'We'd love your feedback! A quick 5-star review would really help.' Most clients will oblige if you did good work. Reviews take 2 minutes to leave and are hugely valuable for your contractor profile.

You got a 3-star review on communication because you didn't respond to one message for 5 days.

You can't delete it, but you can respond publicly: 'Thanks for the feedback. We've since improved our response time to 24 hours. Appreciate the opportunity.' Shows accountability and improvement.

A client leaves you a 2-star review saying 'Finished 10 days late.' But it was due to their design change mid-project.

Respond publicly with facts: 'This timeline was extended via Change Order on [date] due to scope change approved by client. All milestones met relative to revised deadline.' Public response protects your reputation.

You're at 'Unverified' tier. You've completed 2 projects with good reviews. How do you get to 'Licensed'?

After 2 reviews with 4.0+ average, your status automatically updates to 'Licensed' (as long as you've uploaded your license). Check your profile — you should see the badge. New badge = better visibility on job board.

You have 4 excellent reviews (all 5 stars) but 1 bad review (2 stars). Your average is 4.4. Will you get Verified Pro?

Verified Pro requires 5+ reviews at 4.5+ average. You need either 1 more 5-star review (bringing average to 4.6) or to wait until the 2-star review fades in relevance (after many more reviews). Keep delivering great work and asking for reviews.

What to Watch Out For

Common review and rating pitfalls

Not Asking for Reviews

The Problem

You complete great projects but never ask for reviews. No reviews = you stay at lower verification tiers. Fewer bids, less visibility.

The Fix

At project completion, send a message: 'We'd love your feedback on ContractShield. A quick review would help us grow.' Make it easy: 'Takes 2 minutes, goes a long way.'

Being Defensive About Negative Reviews

The Problem

Client leaves a 3-star review. You respond angrily: 'This is unfair!' or ignore it. Potential clients see the angry response and lose trust.

The Fix

Stay professional. Respond factually and graciously: 'We appreciate the feedback. Here's our perspective on [specific issue]. We've since improved in this area.' Maturity builds trust.

Gaming Reviews (Asking Friends to Leave Fake Reviews)

The Problem

You ask your friends to leave 5-star reviews. Platform detects fake reviews (same IP, suspicious patterns) and removes them. Your credibility tanks.

The Fix

Only genuine reviews from actual clients count. Build real reviews by delivering quality work and asking clients to share their honest feedback. Shortcuts destroy trust.

Ignoring Recurring Review Themes

The Problem

You get 3 reviews saying 'Slow communication' and 2 saying 'Finished late.' But you don't see the pattern. You keep losing bids.

The Fix

Read your reviews for patterns. If communication is mentioned multiple times, that's a real gap. Commit to improvements: 'I'll respond to messages within 24 hours.' Prove change with future reviews.

Low Rating on Value Despite Good Quality

The Problem

You get 5 stars on quality and communication but 2-3 stars on value. Clients think you're overpriced.

The Fix

Adjust pricing strategy or offer more transparency: 'Here's why our pricing is higher: we use premium materials and give daily updates.' Or lower rates. Either way, address the perception.

Grow Your Reputation

Complete excellent projects. Ask for reviews. Manage your rating. Climb the verification ladder.
